3wk review:
This collar is a bit pricey and I had high expectations going into it. It has delivered, for the most part on those expectations.
The build quality of the collar is very good. I isn’t a chew toy, but it’ll hold up to the abuse most dogs would put it through. It’s supposedly water proof (I’ll come back to that) and appropriately rugged. That said, it’s not the most attractive thing.
The accuracy is quite good, but we live on 7 acres. Set your expectations appropriately. I’d say you can draw a boundary with about a 10′ confidence range. I don’t think this would be an appropriate solution for a yard under an acre honestly. At that point a traditional wire fence is probably cheaper as well.
Battery life – we get about a day. It goes on him in the morning and lasts until we go to bed. 7am to 10pm. He’s a very active dog and is in and outside all day long.
Cellular notifications – this is where I’m not sure it’s worth the money. The $6 a month subscription plan gives you real time access to the dogs location. It’s not super responsive or accurate. It does alert you when the dog leaves the zone, which for the first few days will likely be often. After about day 4 he never tried to leave again. Given how laggy this is and how well the geo fence works I don’t see the value here unless you have a huge property and can’t quickly or easily find your dog via a vocal recall.
Customer support – unfortunately we did have a defective collar. We didn’t realize it at first but the water seal was broken and after a quick play on our lake the collar died. I hopped on their support chat and had a it triaged and a new collar coming in about 30min. They even next day aired it. When the new collar came I wasn’t sure how to set it up on our account and again very quick response and it was all set. I’ll take good customer service like this any day.
Final thoughts:
It’s not perfect but for a large property this is really a set and forget collar. We’ve found it to be reliable and consistent enough that our dog learned it quickly and we no longer worry about him escaping. I don’t think I’ll be using the cellular plan once my free year expires, but for some it may make sense. Expensive, but it was fast to setup and it works well.
If anything changes in the months to come I’ll update this review. Last updated April of 2024 with 3wks ownership.

Absolutely love this system. The app is easy to use and it’s super easy to adjust my fence lines.
I gave it 4 stars because the battery life isn’t great. Lasts about 20 hours on average.

Let me start by saying I did a LOT of research prior to buying and even then I tired petSafe because it’s more affordable.. well after a week I knew I needed to just bite the bullet and buy the spot on collars.
The collars and app are very user friendly and easy to use.
Being able to customize a fence and make multiple fences.. I mean this product is a game changer! I can’t say enough good things about it!! Stop looking just buy.
UPDATE:
I still love this collar….but I dropped a star because the collar will get HOT like im worried it will start a fire hot on the charger at night. The battery life has also greatly decreased.. just not what I was expecting from this product with such a hight price tag… do I still recommend it? absolutely! I hope this brand comes out with an updated product .

Product worked well for the first 30 days. They did an update and it hasn’t worked since. No alerts, no tracking capabilities. Customer service was to reboot the system which then works for the next 10 minutes . Wouldn’t recommend especially in rural areas.

We have been using the SpotOn collars with our 2 mature working LGDs for over a year and can’t recommend it enough to other dog owners! In fact, we just ordered another for our new LGD Puppy!
These collars have allowed our dogs full freedom on our 56 acres while also allowing me to keep a eye on them in real time in the app, which gives me so much peace of mind as these dogs LOVE to wander if not properly contained. This product is the first thing that has properly worked to keep our dogs home. And it is so easy to change and adjust fence lines if needed. In addition to keeping my dogs on the property I love that I can watch my dogs work in the app even when on the property, and that SpotOn has added new features like the ability for the collar to play a tone for calling the dog home when off at a distance.
Our dogs caught on to the collars very quickly, but SpotOn offers chat help directly in the app for if/when you need it and step by step instructions during set up. I seriously can’t believe how easy the entire setup process was. And at the end of the day these collars have been put through the ringer – our dogs live outdoors in the rain, snow, mud, and even swimming in the pond as well as the dogs wrestling and trying to pull the collars off each other and they are going strong over a year in.
What I also appreciate about this company is that they are always working to update and improve their collar and what it can do, and with each update I’m more and more impressed. As a Farmer who couldn’t live our way of life without a few good LGDs these collars were TOTALLY WORTH THE INVESTMENT and a product I’ll continue to buy over and over.

This has been the worse shock collar ever. Our dog walks out of the barrier not even fazed by the shock, even with his thick fur and us using the extended probes for thick fur use. This sounds terrible, but when the dog passes the shock barrier and he keeps walking away, the shock needs to last more than 1 second. Our chow chow knows that if he runs straight through the electric fence, he only experiences the shock for that 1 second and he can be free. The shock collar did work for a while but he’s outsmarted it. The collar is being used as a GPS collar now.
Pro: works with a younger dog, water proof, fast chaging, easy to setup
Con: smarter dogs learn how to escape, shock is not as strong, gps is too buggy and requires clear skys because even though it tells you the signal is good it could take 2 minutes for the app to give you accurate location. Subscription for live tracking is the same way, the real time tracker for when he escapes will tell you the exact spot he’s in, until the gps loses track of the signal, then you’re just sitting at the spot where your dog should be but no where to be found…. until the signal reconnects with the satellite.
I think I will purchase a manual shock collar.
Edit: this thing has randomly shocked our dog, even while inside of the fence. I know there can be satellite drift, but we extended the fence quite far to prevent this and it has still done it

The Spot On GPS collar has been an absolute game changer for us! This is actually our second collar we have ordered (we loved the first one so much, we decided to buy another one for our OTHER dog). We ordered our first one last year and can’t say enough good things about it. It honestly shocks me reading some of the negative reviews on here, because that has not been our experience at all (or other people we know that have these collars).
We have a farm on a busy road, and a LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog). We were struggling to find an affordable solution to keep our dog on our property, away from the road and visitors, while still allowing him the freedom to do his job (keeping our animals safe from predators). We needed a system that could encompass several acres of hay fields, pastures, forest and a deep ravine, that was reliable in any weather, could go around obstacles easily (buildings, driveways, trees, etc), and was affordable. We looked at different options, did lots of research and settled on the Spot On collar. While initially the price seemed high, when we compared the features it offered, the reviews from people we knew and trusted, and the benefits it gave us, versus what another system could do and would cost us, we decided it was actually reasonably priced, and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made for our farm!
PROS:
-I ordered it off of Amazon and it arrived the very next day!
-Set up was simple, the mobile app is convenient and user friendly;
-It works great on large dogs (we have a Great Pyrenees with a thick neck and a long coat of hair – we just separate the hair to make sure the prongs are making contact, and it works perfectly, and comes with two lengths of prongs to use – depending on your dog’s hair length);
– The collar is adjustable, and durable (it has been through the ringer with our LGD – soaked in water from rain or snow, been in freezing temps because our dog is outside all day, and has stayed securely on, even when he is wrestling with our other dog that always goes for his neck, or when he’s running through dense brush after a predator);
-It was so fast to train our dog on – took us only two days (one 20 minute session each day);
-He never gets shocked because he has a multi-stage warning system the closer he gets to the boundary line (first a noise, then a vibration, last is the shock);
-When I change fence boundaries, I don’t have to retrain him because he has such a large distance of warning before he ever approaches the shock point, so he automatically knows where the new line is;
-We never have to worry about weather impacting the collar in our Canadian winter (a buried Invisible Electric Fence can cut out once snow gets deep, and is susceptible to damage from rodents chewing through the lines);
-I can have multiple fences set up (saved in a library for fast access) and change the boundaries as many times as I want – invaluable to farmers with changing pastures or locations they need their dogs in;
-The collar has worked perfectly and precisely for us (and we’ve had our first one for a long time now), even during blizzards, freezing temps, when our dog has been in our metal-roofed barn, the thick forest or at the bottom of our deep tree-covered ravine (we don’t usually have good service for phones or internet in this area, but the Spot On collar has always had fantastic service no matter where our dog is);
-It has real-time tracking available – we can see where our LGD is at all times using the app on my phone, and I can pull up a report of where he has been to monitor where our heaviest predator loads are trying to access our property from;
-The fence is attached to the collar, so if we move, it goes with us – we never need to buy a fence again (this includes being able to use it for short trips to a cottage, family member’s house, vacation spot… we can set up a fence in seconds in whatever location we are in);
-FAVOURITE FEATURE: Keep Out Zones – Best feature for farmers with LGD’s!!! I can have areas blocked off when I need it (the chicken coop, a pond or pool, the compost pile, the manure pile, the barn when the farrier or vet comes, an area when a customer comes to pick something up, etc). This came in so handy when we were building a coop and I wanted him to stay out of the way… 3 seconds and it was activated. When we were done, I just removed it. THIS FEATURE IS LITERALLY GENIUS!
-It has multiple levels of static correction we can choose from, so we can tailor it to our individual dogs.
-Long battery life each day (essential for a LGD) – we take his collar off each night to charge it (and during the day I can monitor in real-time how much battery life is left so we never get caught with a low battery level);
-I have peace of mind knowing I will be notified immediately if he breaches the line to go after a predator, and I will also have an exact GPS location so we can find him if he is injured and can’t return on his own. This is literally a LIFE-SAVING FEATURE for an LGD (or any dog really).
-Spot On had excellent customer service when I called with a question and they were extremely professional, friendly, and helpful.
CONS:
-We initially thought the price was a con, but this system blows other cheaper systems out of the water with the features it offers, and it covers up to 1000 acres, so we could never install a wire fence or underground electric fence for anywhere close to the cost of this collar – which really makes it a PRO;
-If you have an LGD that is outside 24/7 (ours goes in the barn for a few hours each night), it would be nice to have two collars so you could switch them out while charging the one (still cheaper than alternatives and worth it in my opinion for what this collar gives you);
-You need to buy a collar for each dog (that said, even buying a collar for all of our dogs will still be cheaper than installing an underground fence for a large area, and it can travel with us wherever we go).
This collar has been worth every penny for us, and it has completely changed how our LGD is able to protect our animals from an extensive predator load in the area (including coyotes, wolves, fox, black bears, etc), while keeping him away from the busy road we live on, visitor areas of our farm, and other Keep-Out Zones of our choosing. If you are a dog owner, but more importantly, if you are a farmer looking for a way to revolutionise how you can operate your farm by containing your LGD to the areas you need, maximising their ability to do their job, minimising animal losses to predators and financial investment, and making your day-to-day work easier with Keep-Out Zones that are fast and easy to create, I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS COLLAR ENOUGH!!!
Copperwood Acres –
Great collar and it works but it won’t hold a charge so I have to bring my dog inside twice a day to charge the collar. Returning it. Too expensive for it to not work 100%.
Heather Engel –
I cannot say enough good things about this collar. We recently bought land and it’s fully wooded at the moment. I wanted our dogs to have enough space, but honestly trying to build a fence through the place was going to be a huge hassle.
I did a lot of research before going with Spot On Vs the others- one big thing was the ability to fence in all of our 56 acres if I wanted to AND their reviews for working in heavily wooded areas.
SpotOn did not disappoint. We’ve been using these collars for months and it has worked flawlessly. The tree cover does not prevent the collar from working. I do have the subscription for the live tracking, but the collar works out of the box too!
It was really easy to train my dogs on the collar. The customer service is amazing!
If you’re on the fence (pun intended) about purchasing these, DO IT! They are worth the price.
You can also set 20 different fences, so I have fences drawn for when I’m visiting family out of state or when I bring the dogs to our truck shop- I just click what fence I want in the app and it uploads to the collar. IT IS SO EASY!
Keep out zones are great too! We have an area with a bunch of old rusty barbed wire that I was able to draw a “no go zone” around so they don’t get hurt.
We love this product so much and I’m so glad we made the investment!!
