Description

An explosive memoir of transformation from a high-end stripper and escort who hit rock-bottom, turned to God, and left the sex trade to found Eve’s Angels, a ministry reaching out to women in the sex industry.

Growing up as the daughter of an NCAA Championship-winning basketball coach and a stay-at-home mom, Anny Donewald had a seemingly blessed childhood. Then, at thirteen, one of her father’s players sexually abused her, and Donewald embarked on a path toward self-destruction.

When Donewald was convinced to compete in an amateur night at a strip club, she found herself drawn into a world of drugs, money, and flesh peddlers in Michigan and Chicago—and eventually Las Vegas’ hottest XXX clubs. But the fantasy of fistfuls of hundred dollar bills quickly turned to the reality of bloodstains on bathroom floors and nights with customers in presidential suites at luxurious hotels. At an emotional breaking point and pondering the termination of her unborn son, Anny reached the gates of her personal hell. There, she found God.

Then, this long-legged, fiery blonde fought to free herself from the sex trade, and, by the healing grace of God, launched her non-profit, Eve’s Angels, which reaches out to girls who want out of the sex trade.

Dancing for the Devil takes an in-depth look at Anny’s struggles and sheds a new insider’s light on the horrible reality of the sex industry from someone who’s seen the worst of it. This captivating memoir shows how women from all walks of life find themselves trapped by the sex trade and, most importantly, explains how they can get out, start over, and find the love of Christ. Courageous and unforgettable, Dancing for the Devil is a heartbreaking story of darkness, grace, and, ultimately, redemption.

I loved this book. It was real and raw and it helped solidify a change in me. Through Anny’s story of the humanity behind the “dancer” it awakened in me a desire to protect my sisters. I could never look at women as an object after reading this, because the veil was gone of what it is really like for my sisters and God’s daughters to live this life.

If you’re ready for realism and a great success story, you’ve got a great read. Anny has dared to write an autobiography which is painfully honest and transparent with the intention of helping others. It is worth purchasing if for no other reason. It is an insider’s exposition of the “strip club” industry. It’s not for the timid. It’s an eye-opener for those who might think they know what this world is about and what motivates the entertainers. As an autobiography, it spans her full lifetime -raised in a good home, her father in the local limelight; interesting. There are some unexpected events though, and some are heavy to read through. I would recommend skipping to ch. 19 or 20 if you’re inclined to put it down. The final chapters put a great new perspective on it all. She not only has a tragic life turned around, but becomes a model for great leadership and dedication to help others in trouble. Whether or not you know much about the sex industry, this book will help you gain understanding.

The story and the writing are excellent. Sex trafficking in both Canada and The US are tragic. I personally worked with two underage prostitues who were murdered as very young adults. The poeple, all of them, are human beings created in the likeness and image of God who loves them unconditionally as He does all of His creation. They are broken as we all are by sin. Anny does an excellent job conveying the denial and despair for those involved and what each one of us can accomplish wen we place our trust and will in God’s hands.

I gave four stars because I was disappointed when she, intentional or not, included her own personal theology on Baptism, that I strongly disagree with . I wish she had left such an important issue out of her book as she is not a theologian or a scritpure scholar to make such an important assertion . I do not see how her opinion on baptism has any relevance to her journey other then to be preachy to those who think differently about this sacrament. Impressionable minds can easily conclude that if God has guided her so strongly in A B and C she must be correct on this issue. Ironically my daughter is a teenager who we adopted recently and she is preparing for Baptism. I wanted her to read the book until I came to Anny’s mini-preach on baptism. I still don’t get the point for its inclusions as its so irrelevant to anything else she is writing about. It is an important sacrament in our families faith . Because my daughter is at an impressionable age and new on her faith journey I had to weigh the pros and cons, as each of us does in matters of our personal faith and how we guide our children, and decided not yet. On the other hand I want her to learn about this subculture so prevalent in our society because I have seen it up close and personal and I know it is very real. Faith must come first so for this reason I will not pass my daughter the book at this point. This point is probably irrelevant to most readers but it is very relevant to me as a reader so I am sharing it in this review.

Another reader wished there had been more included about her family members and their journey while she was in the lifestyle. I hope at some point these accounts can be told as they too are important for the family members who are helpless watching our loved ones self destruct. Her parents humble faith and TRUST was probably the most inspiring for me of the entire book.

Very well written. It gives you an accurate yet tastefully descriptive insight into the industry and the war that wages within each girl. My heart breaks for those that feel trapped by their circumstances. I applaud Annie and her ministry to reach those who are often overlooked or discarded by many Christian churches. I also appreciate her candor and honesty in telling her own story.

A thrill book – a must read to understand how the business (try to) destroy our girls. Full of hope at last

Un livre passionnant – impossible à quitter – un chemin initiatique dans ce business scandaleux et une ode à l’espoir aussi

Carrie Gerlach Cecil does an excellent job conveying Ms. Donewald’s story without changing Ms. Donewald’s voice. High praise, I know! This book is not for the faint of heart. Ms. Donewald’s “those-living-in-darkness-have-seen-a-great-light” moment is miraculous and awe-inspiring. The Donewald family is long-suffering, and unbelievably loving, and faithful. Ms. Donewald’s role in a small Ohio town’s church-strip club conflict is verifiable and true. The ultimate message is that God works deeply in us, and Ms. Donewald’s vulnerability in the book’s final healing story reminds one of Corrie Ten Boom’s words, “no pit is so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.”

In many ways I can’t say I know what she felt in this book or what drove her. However everyone handles sexual assault in their own way. I was assaulted when I was 10 by a teacher and unlike Anny, I chose to block it out of my mind for 39 years. I didn’t drive me to the sex industry, but significant damage was done to my ability to have normal relationships and I became a control freak. I’ve gone through much healing after private distructive behaviors that hurt my spirit and soul. I too would have enjoyed more post change because people need hope and good news. It’s graphic, honest and redemptive.

This book was an amazing account of one young ladies journey to God. Anny gives an account of her struggles, woundedness, and life’s blows that followed her into a life that she was not created for. She gives hope for those trapped in the sex industry that they too can find freedom and redemption. The book helps others get behind the scenes of the dark side of the industry and how anyone can be lured into the “glimmer” of this business. Light needs to be shed on these issues and Anny turns up the all the lights to expose the darkness. Watch it flee and as she continues to go back and extend a life line to those who are reaching out for help in this arena.
    Highly recommend it!!

An important testimony with an essential message. A very inspiring lady.

This autobiography tells of a woman’s transformation from a young innocent girl to a stripper/prostitute and how she was redeemed by turning to Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She now has a full time ministry witnessing to and pouring out love to other women in the sex industry. She writes beautifully that it is love and grace that will win these women to the Lord, not condemnation and scorn. A great read for anyone who loves tales of beauty from ashes!

Seriously loved reading about this woman’s story. I am a Christian & have a heart bent towards those who struggle with abuse, sexual traumas, & sex trafficking. To hear a woman’s story about how her circumstances groomed her for entrapment within the sex industry was so humbling. I am so thankful that Anny shared her story. A GREAT read! I don’t recommend it if you struggle with lust or pornography though.
